Landslides

Landslides are a common consequence of earthquakes, often resulting in significant damage to structures and potential loss of lives. Therefore, estimating the locations and severity of landslides is an essential part of earthquake engineering. As a catastrophe risk modeler at RMS, I have developed a landslide risk model using landslide inventory data obtained for the largest earthquakes including the 1994 Northridge, California, the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan, the 2005 Kashmir, Pakistan, the 2008 Wenchuan, China, and the 2010-2011 New Zealand earthquakes, considering various controlling factors and using a logistic regression method. While continuing the worldwide landslide research, I would like to develop landslide models for Korea for both earthquake- and rainfall-induced cases. As seen in the case of Umyeonsan landslide in 2011, Korea is at risk of rainfall-induced landslides.
